Size Notes:

canvas: 47 by 40 in.; 120 by 102.2 cm.

Edition:

The following condition report has been provided by Simon Parkes of Simon Parkes Art Conservation, Inc. 502 East 74th St. New York, NY 212-734-3920, [email protected], an independent restorer who is not an employee of Sotheby's. This work has been restored, but not recently. The canvas has an old European glue lining, on which there is a more recent patch addressing an upside down L-shaped break in the canvas. This break extends about 6 inches vertically and 3 inches horizontally. The horizontal segment of the break runs along the inside of the stretcher bar in the upper center. There is a diagonal scratch or raised area of pigment running from the green leaf near the lower right edge towards the carpet on which the still life sits, which measures about 6-7 inches. There is a vertical break in the center of the left side. There are a couple of other spots of restoration. The condition of the still life itself is good, and the background seems to be healthy. The more recent restoration to the break in the upper center could be improved, ideally without changing the lining, but the work is also presentable as is.
